Reaching My Limit (Confessions of an Overachiever)
Rafi B.
I’ve stepped down as Communication Chief and shared this in email. I’m reprinting it here in the
newsletter for any who missed it and are curious, and for what it may offer about how we live our lives
inside and outside the Circle of Men.
May 19, 2022 - Men, I'm going to be missing some meetings this summer and will be shedding
my chiefly responsibilities to the fullest extent possible. I am requesting your support in
keeping the men informed and updated.
Here's a Scribe sign-up sheet where you can step in to take notes at an upcoming meeting,
including next week's Fire Circle. Jay Harlow did us proud at the April Fire Circle. Please step up and
keep this record of our meetings alive.
BUT WHYYYY?
While I have your attention, allow me to go deeper, letting some of our standards mark the way:
Show Up: I announced my planned departure from the leadership council nearly three months ago.
The four men I have invited to take my place have declined. There is an opportunity here waiting for the
right initiated man. The right initiated man is one who is ready to serve on the council, perform the
duties their role entails, and is approved by the men after a brief apprenticeship. Come be the
chronicler of our legacy.
Speak the Truth: I'm reaching my limit of balancing chiefing with my other life circumstances. As
my workplace returns to the office and I expand my work team, I am reassessing my time commitments
and focusing on quality of activities rather than quantity. After mainlining it for five years, I'm lowering
the EBCOM dosage, as it's powerful stuff.
Keep Your Word: Sometimes we give our word to many different things and with effort and
intention, we fulfil on our word. Then, there are times when we grow our lives or play a bigger game
and can no longer keep our word everywhere. The effort and intention cannot stretch beyond a certain
point. It's a good lesson for me to confront. If necessary in the coming months, I will break my word and
step down without a successor
