Team Motto: “You can run, but you can’t hide from being a better man.” —Terry McMahon
The Bushwackers are the oldest team in East Bay Circle of Men—established in 1983—with many members having committed significant portions of their lives to creating an organization for men and to providing support for men to realize their dreams. With each man being a graduate of the Sterling Men’s Weekend, the team is presently comprised of 7 men, ranging in age from their 40s to their 70s. All men are married, all but two have children.
Below each man offers something about themselves, their team, or their work with men.
Michael Burns
My men’s work began after initiation into 20th century manhood by the Sterling Men’s Weekend in 4/86, NYC. 40 years participating in various teams and circles finds me all in with EBCOM and the Bushwackers. I have learned how to support, be supported, lead, be led, and am still training to be a worthy elder among men, teams, families, and communities.
Phillip Garrison
I’m on the Bushwackers because I respect the men on the team. I know that they will help me to be a better man, and stand in my integrity, by being honest with me even when it’s not comfortable. I also know that they will believe in me even when I’m uncertain.
Michael Grubb
I am on the Bushwackers because I know these men will push me to give my best. These men tell me the truth about how I show up in the world. Because of this team I perform better in all areas of my life.
Charles Mance
“A man needs men to support and empower him to be a better man than he would be on his own”
Terry McMahon
I have been on a men’s team for close to 40 years. It has made a huge difference in all aspects of my life. I’m a better man, son, brother, husband, father, employee, manager and friend because of it. Being an active participant on the Bushwackers has allowed me to have men in my life as committed to my success and well being as I am to theirs. This trust, brotherhood and commitment to support each man to be his best self are the gifts we give each other each time we meet. We are truly blessed and I wish this blessing on all men.
Andy Rado
I am an artist, father and husband, committed to stretching, knowing (and sharing) my truth, and becoming more of who I already am. I have found being on the Bushwackers (since 2009) the most effective way to keep those commitments and keep my life moving forward in positive ways. It is difficult for me to imagine where I’d be without the support of this team.
Simon Thorpe
The newest member of the team and has been a member of EBCOM since 2025. I was drawn to the team because they uphold the principles of men’s work and EBCOM’s standards. They are incredibly supportive and have been a significant part of my journey into being a better man. Their honesty helps me stay accountable and focused.
Current Team Captain’s Vision – Grubb:
- Raise the bar for our team as well as personally in our lives.
- Be a team others are impressed and inspired by.
- Pair with other teams to complete at least 5 community service projects this year.
